Tiger and Turtle- Magic Mountain

Building Name -: Tiger and Turtle – Magic Mountain

Location           -: Duisburg, Germany

Designer           -: Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth (German artists )

Year of opening-: 2008

Description       -:

  • The roller coaster stands for acceleration and high speed of a tiger but the visitor has to explore it step by step like a turtle.
  • It has been built on top of a mining waste tip at the Heinrich-Hildebrand-Height in the Angerpark.
  • It counters the logic of permanent growth with an absurd-‐contradictory sculpture that refuses a definite interpretation.
  • The visitor can climb the art work by foot. Although the course describes a closed loop, it is impossible to accomplish it as the looping emerges to be a physical barrier.
  • With 44 x 37 meters base and 21 meters construction height  stands 85 metres above sea level the sculpture is not only one of the largest in Germany, but also a masterpiece of engineering.
  • It is made of tin, zinc and steel.
  • Zinc used to be produced in the local area and steel at Krupp Mannesmann, a major steel-processing company.
  • About 120 tons of galvanised steel were used to make the sculpture which is supported by 17 posts.
  • There are 249 steps on the walkway, which is 220 metres long in total, and LED lights illuminate the handrails at night.
